European Parliament calls for review in relations with Egypt

The European Parliament passed a resolution on December 18, 2020 on the deteriorating situation of human rights in Egypt. It calls for the immediate and unconditional release of those arbitrarily detained and sentenced for carrying out their legitimate and peaceful work on human rights, in particular Laila Soueif’s children, Alaa Abdel Fattah and Sanaa Seif. The European Parliament called on its member states to conduct a “deep and comprehensive” review of relations with Egypt in light of the deteriorating human rights situation there. The statement demanded studying the imposition of sanctions on senior Egyptian officials, who are involved in “serious violations”.
