The Egyptian Commission on Rights and Freedoms announced that the Cairo Criminal Court had decided to renew the pre-trial detention of Laila Soueif’s son, the prominent political activist Alaa Abdel Fattah, for a period of 45 days. He has been arbitrarily detained since September 2019 at Tora Maximum Security Prison 2, facing charges of “spreading, publishing and disseminating false news and data”, “misuse of a social media medium ‘Facebook'” and “membership of a terrorist organization” whose name has never been communicated to him.
